thats a great find thank you @headtr1ck . the fix will be to add a leading zero to the 2 i.e. https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/v2026.02.0/xarray/core/common.py#L520-L665

I'm also going to close this an re-open on the xarray repo which is where this will need to be fixed
